Meta Muse + Shop Pay: The Shopify Guide for Fashion and Beauty Brands (2026)

Short answer: Muse is Meta's personal AI shopping and task agent, launched in the US on September 8, 2026. Shopify stores reach it through Shopify Catalog and are included by default. Shopify and Meta announced agentic checkout with Shop Pay inside Muse on September 21, 2026. Subscriptions, bundles and customizable products cannot use Shopify's direct checkout inside Muse.

Meta's own launch list tells you why fashion and beauty teams should care. At Connect 2026, Meta named Gap, Michael Kors, American Eagle Outfitters, Sephora and Ulta as Muse shopping partners, alongside "the entire Shopify catalogue." Your category leaders are already there. Few merchant-side guides exist yet, so this one covers what Shopify and Meta have actually documented, what is still unconfirmed, and what to change in your catalog this month.

Key takeaways

  • The product is officially called Muse. In Shopify admin, the channel is labeled Meta AI and Muse under Sales channels > Agentic.

  • Your products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog (since September 8, 2026).

  • Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico.

  • You stay the merchant of record. You fulfill, handle returns and own customer service.

  • Shop Pay appears in Muse "when available," with no separate activation.

  • Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products cannot use direct checkout in Muse.

  • GA4 and pixel-based attribution do not fire on Muse checkouts. Only server-side events do.

  • Meta has not launched virtual try-on or visual search inside Muse yet. Win on structured data and brand demand instead.

What is Meta Muse?

Muse is a personal AI agent from Meta, powered by Meta's Muse Spark model. It runs in its own iOS and Android app, on the web at muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp. It can send emails, fill forms, book travel and make purchases , and Meta says it asks for approval before buying anything.

Muse is not a feature inside the Instagram or Facebook feed. That matters for strategy. Shoppers reach your products by asking Muse for something in conversation, and Muse looks them up in catalogs. Feed ads do not place you in those answers.

Early traction was strong. CBS News and EMARKETER reported more than 2.5 million US downloads in about two weeks, with Muse reaching the top of the App Store.

The Muse rollout timeline (September 2026)

Date What happened
Sep 8 Meta launches Muse in the US. Shopify adds Meta as an AI channel; products shared by default through Shopify Catalog
Sep 18 Muse becomes available in Canada
Sep 21 Tobi Lütke announces Shopify is partnering with Muse "to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores"
Sep 23–24 Meta Connect names retail partners (Gap, Michael Kors, AEO, Sephora, Ulta and more) and lists Shop Pay and PayPal as payment options
Sep 29 Meta announces Muse for Small Business, connecting Muse to merchants' ad accounts and work tools

At launch on September 8, Muse paid through Link by Stripe, with Shop Pay listed as "coming soon." Shop Pay's live status is still worded cautiously. Shopify's help page says Shop Pay can appear in Muse "when available," and The Paypers reported that no full-availability timeline had been disclosed. Plan for Shop Pay in Muse, but test it on your own store rather than assuming every shopper sees it.

How Shopify products get into Muse

Many merchants assume the Facebook & Instagram channel is what puts them in Muse. Shopify's September 8 changelog says products reach Meta through Shopify Catalog.

Per Shopify's Meta channel help page, your store is eligible when it:

  1. Sells to customers in the US, Canada or Mexico

  2. Has products eligible for Shopify Catalog

  3. Has accepted the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms

  4. Has completed Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy under Settings > Policies

Shopify's Meta help page lists the Facebook & Instagram by Meta channel as a requirement for shoppable ads. Another Shopify help page links Meta surfaces to that channel, so if you already run it, keep it connected and syncing.

Shopify Catalog has its own eligibility rules. Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above $0 and an identifiable product URL, and it cannot be Unlisted. Some categories are excluded outright, including CBD supplements, prescription and medical products, and sexual health products. Shopify classifies products from their content, which can differ from the category you set in admin.

How Shop Pay checkout works inside Muse

When direct checkout is on, the shopper starts and finishes the purchase without leaving Meta. If checkout needs information Meta cannot collect, the shopper is sent to your store's checkout in a Meta in-app browser with the cart kept.

What stays the same for you:

  • You are the merchant of record. You fulfill orders, process returns and handle service.

  • Orders land in Shopify admin attributed to Meta, like any other channel.

  • Shopify Functions run, including shipping, discount and validation logic. Automatic discounts and discount codes work.

What changes:

  • Checkout blocks do not render. Upsells, loyalty, custom fields, address autocomplete and consent collection blocks are not shown.

  • Local delivery, pickup and required sign-in are not supported.

  • GA4 and custom pixels do not fire. Only server-to-server "checkout started" and "checkout completed" events do.

On Shopify Plus, that last group hurts most. A checkout tuned with Checkout Extensibility apps becomes a plain checkout inside Muse.

Which of your SKUs can actually check out in Muse?

Run this audit before you plan any Muse campaign. Products that fail it can still be discovered, but at best the shopper gets sent to your site.

Product type Discoverable in Muse? In-chat checkout? What to do
Standard single product with variants Yes Yes Optimize data (below)
Subscription-only product (subscribe-and-save with no one-time option) Yes No Add a one-time purchase option on hero SKUs
Bundles and kits (beauty sets, outfit bundles) Yes No Offer the hero item alone, or a pre-built kit sold as a single standard product (test before relying on it)
Customizable or personalized items (monograms, engraving) Yes No Accept the redirect, or offer a non-custom version
B2B-only or wholesale-only items Excluded when detectable No No action
CBD-classified skincare or "wellness" items Excluded from Catalog No Review copy so non-CBD items are not misclassified
Unlisted products No No Unlist anything you never want sold by agents

What Muse appears to reward (and what is unconfirmed)

Neither Meta nor Shopify has published how Muse ranks products. Shopify's guidance is to provide "accurate, detailed, and descriptive product information" across titles, descriptions, images, categories, variants, prices and inventory.

The only detailed evidence comes from Profound, an AI search analytics company, which says it extracted Muse's shopping instructions on September 25, 2026. PPC Land reported the findings on October 11. Meta has not commented, and Profound sells into this space, so treat these as signals to test, not rules:

  • Listings priced well above or well below a category's normal range are filtered out.

  • The top five picks favor well-known merchants.

  • When a shopper names a brand, that brand's own store ranks first, ahead of resellers.

  • A result needs an in-stock product page that can be added to cart and shows a real product image.

  • Reviews, shipping and returns were not named as signals.

Two practical lessons follow. Brand-name demand is your strongest lever, because named-brand queries route to your own store first. And extreme markdowns may hurt visibility, so watch how deep BFCM pricing goes relative to your category.

Fashion playbook for Muse

  1. Bind the right image to every variant. A shopper asking for "the olive version in a medium" should see olive.

  2. Make size and fit structured. Use consistent option names (Size, Color, Inseam) and fill the category attributes Shopify offers for your apparel category, such as color, size and material. Put size-chart facts in plain text in the description, not only in an image.

  3. Write titles an agent can parse. Brand + product type + key attribute ("[Brand] Linen Wrap Dress, Midi Length") beats a campaign name like "The Riviera Drop."

  4. Group colorways properly. Use combined listings or Shopify Catalog's custom combined listings if each color is a separate product.

  5. Keep stock visible. Muse appears to skip out-of-stock pages. Hide sold-out variants or mark them clearly.

  6. Watch price outliers. Keep sale pricing within a believable range for the category.

Beauty playbook for Muse

  1. Put shade, finish and skin type in structured fields. Shopify's Skin Care category includes attributes such as Suitable for skin type, Skin care effect, Active ingredient and Constitutive ingredients. Fill them, then repeat the key facts in the description.

  2. List full ingredients as text. Shopify's taxonomy has no INCI field, so include the full INCI list in the description. Shoppers ask agents about ingredients to avoid.

  3. Make reorders easy. Barney Stacher of Retail OCD, quoted by Inside Retail, singles out beauty reorders as a simple task for Muse. Clear size and volume variants ("30 ml" vs "50 ml") make "reorder my serum" work.

  4. Separate kits from hero products. Kits and bundles cannot check out in Muse. Make sure each hero item is also sold on its own.

  5. Avoid drug-claim language. SPF, acne and "heals" claims move skincare into drug territory under FDA rules, and Shopify excludes prescription and medical products from Catalog.

  6. Learn from the early movers. Shopify reported that beauty brand ILIA's AI-referred sales nearly tripled year over year (Shopify News, October 6, 2026).

We go deeper on skincare and supplement attributes in our Shopify Catalog mapping guide.

Attribution and fees

Attribution. Muse orders show up in Shopify admin attributed to Meta, but GA4, custom pixels and third-party marketing attribution pixels do not fire. If you judge Meta performance in Ads Manager or GA4, Muse sales will look like unattributed revenue. Send order events server-side (Meta Conversions API, GA4 Measurement Protocol or server-side GTM) and reconcile weekly against admin orders by channel.

Fees. Shopify's help page says there are no extra fees for direct checkout on Meta beyond standard payment processing. Mark Zuckerberg said at Connect that Meta expects to earn from Muse by taking a small fee from transactions, and press reports say merchants would pay it. No rate or date has been published. Both statements can be true today if Meta's fee is not yet live.

Ads. Meta says Muse conversations are not shared with its ad systems, and no Advantage+ integration with Muse has been announced. Muse for Small Business connects Muse to your ad accounts as an operator tool. It is not ad placement inside Muse.

How to control Muse in Shopify admin

  1. Go to Sales channels > Agentic.

  2. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me (this unlocks per-channel controls).

  3. Open Meta AI and Muse.

  4. Set Shopify Catalog access (discovery) and Direct checkout (in-chat purchase) as needed.

  5. Click Save.

Turning off Catalog access can take up to 7 days to stop data sharing, and it does not affect the Shop app. Our full Shopify Agentic Storefronts settings guide covers every switch.

What Muse does not do yet

Be honest with your team about this. As of October 13, 2026, there is no evidence of virtual try-on, photo-based visual search, style profiles or creator-content shopping inside Muse. Fashion Network's review of Muse's commerce features found it compares listings and prices across sites. Meta says Muse is coming to its AI glasses in the coming months, where it will be able to act on products the wearer is looking at.

So the fashion and beauty case for Muse today rests on three things: your competitors are already integrated, shoppers can buy without leaving the chat, and structured product data decides whether you show up.
