Short answer: Shopify Agentic Storefronts settings live at Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic. A master switch called "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on by default. It shares your products with every AI channel, turns on in-chat checkout where a channel supports it, and enrolls your store in future channels. To control any single channel, you must turn that master switch off first.
That one switch now decides how your store sells inside Meta's Muse, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT. Two changes in September 2026 made it urgent:
- September 8, 2026: Shopify added Meta as an AI channel and began sharing products with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog.
- Around September 18–22, 2026: Google began emailing eligible US Shopify merchants that their products could now be bought directly in AI Mode and Gemini, with checkout on by default. Search Engine Roundtable reported the emails on September 22.
Most merchants never clicked anything to join. This guide walks through every setting, what it changes, and which defaults we keep or change for client stores.
Key takeaways
- All controls are under Sales channels > Agentic (admin.shopify.com/agentic). Changes need a Save click.
- The master switch is on by default. Turning it back on later re-enables direct checkout everywhere.
- Turning off Shopify Catalog access can take up to 7 days to stop data sharing.
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt does not stop Shopify Catalog sharing.
- Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire on direct checkouts in Google, Copilot or Meta. Only server-side events do.
- Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products cannot use direct checkout.
- Shopify lists no channel fees beyond standard payment processing.
What changed in September 2026
Shopify has been opting merchants into AI channels since early 2026. Search Engine Journal dates the first automatic opt-in to January 12, 2026, and Shopify gave Agentic Storefronts its own admin page on May 11, 2026. September added two large channels on the same default-on terms.
| Date (2026) | Change |
|---|---|
| Sep 8 | Meta added as an AI channel. "Your products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog." |
| Sep 8 | Meta launches Muse, its personal AI agent, in the US |
| Sep 21 | Shopify and Meta announce agentic checkout with Shop Pay inside Muse |
| Sep 22 (reported) | Google notifies eligible US Shopify merchants that products can be bought natively in AI Mode and Gemini. "There's nothing for you to set up." |
Two nuances matter. First, Shopify's Google help page says direct checkout is still "rolling out," so some eligible stores may not see it yet. Second, Shopify's own Meta help page says Shop Pay appears in Muse "when available," so treat Shop Pay inside Muse as live for some shoppers, not guaranteed for all.
Where Agentic Storefronts settings live
Go to Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic, or open admin.shopify.com/agentic directly.
You need to be the store owner, or a staff member with both the Products > View and App and sales channel > Agentic permissions.
The page also holds your agentic performance data: sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion per channel, a search preview of raw Shopify Catalog results, and Listing quality scores. Those scores check description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant completeness and store policies.

The master switch and the three manual controls
"Allow Shopify to manage for me" is the gateway. While it is on, every channel control is locked in the "on" position. Turn it off and three store-wide switches appear, plus a page for each channel.
| Setting | What it controls | Default | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow Shopify to manage for me | All channels on, direct checkout on, auto-enroll in future channels | On | Turning it back on re-enables direct checkout on every channel |
| Shopify Catalog access | Whether third-party AI channels can read your products through Shopify Catalog | On | Can take up to 7 days to stop sharing. Also turns off direct checkout. Products can still surface through web crawling |
| Auto enroll new storefronts | Whether your store joins new AI channels automatically | On | New channels arrive with Catalog access and direct checkout on |
| Direct checkout | Shoppers buy inside the AI conversation (on) or get sent to your online store (off) | On, except stores on the Agentic plan | Off still keeps products discoverable |
There is also an Other channels entry for smaller and emerging AI agents. Search Engine Journal reports the admin describes it as covering platforms like Perplexity, and that it is on by default through auto-enroll. Shopify's own help text describes it more generally as smaller and emerging AI agents.
Channel-by-channel settings
Each channel exposes different switches. This is the part most guides get wrong.
| Channel (admin label) | Catalog access switch | Direct checkout switch | How the shopper pays | Who it reaches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes | No | Sent to your store's checkout in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Stores selling to US customers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Yes | Yes | In the chat, Shopify-powered checkout | Stores selling to US customers |
| Meta AI and Muse | Yes | Yes | In the chat, Shop Pay where available | Stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | No (discovery comes from Merchant Center) | Yes | In the chat, US buyers only | US-based stores selling to US customers, with Merchant Center |
A few details per channel:
ChatGPT is a discovery and referral channel for Shopify stores. Your branding, checkout customizations and payment methods all apply because the buyer lands on your checkout. Products in OpenAI's prohibited categories do not appear, and required legal disclosures must sit within the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
Google AI Mode and Gemini read your products from Google Merchant Center, usually through the Google & YouTube channel with automatic product and shipping sync on. That is why there is no Catalog switch here. To keep a product out of Google's AI surfaces, exclude it in your Merchant Center feed.
Meta AI and Muse receive your products through Shopify Catalog, per Shopify's September 8 changelog. Shopify's Meta help page lists the Facebook & Instagram channel as a requirement only for shoppable ads, though another Shopify help page links Meta surfaces to that channel. If you already run the Facebook & Instagram channel, keep it connected.
Shop, Shopify's own app, also uses Shopify Catalog but is not controlled here. Manage it in the Shop sales channel settings.
How to opt out of one AI channel (step by step)
Say you want to keep ChatGPT and Google but stop in-chat checkout on Meta until your tracking is ready.
- Go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Open Meta AI and Muse.
- Turn off Direct checkout. Leave Shopify Catalog access on if you still want to be discoverable.
- Click Save.
- Go back to the store-wide controls and decide on Auto enroll new storefronts. If you leave it on, the next channel Shopify adds arrives with checkout on.
Do not turn the master switch back on as a shortcut later. It restores direct checkout across every channel.
How to hide a single product from AI channels
Shopify documents only two product-level controls:
- Set the product to Unlisted. This removes it from AI channels, but also from your sitemap, Google and other search engines, and online store search.
-
Use the
seo.hiddenmetafield. This also hides the product from search engines and site search.
Both are blunt. There is no native "hide from AI but keep in Google" toggle as of October 2026. For a product you want in organic search but out of an AI channel, the practical options are a Merchant Center feed exclusion (for Google) or turning off that channel's Catalog access entirely.
What Shopify shares, and what robots.txt does not stop
By default, Shopify Catalog shares each product's title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes. Inventory and pricing update continuously. Store policies are exposed separately through agent discovery files: /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.
Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt only affects open-web crawling. It does not stop Shopify Catalog feeds. If you want out, use the Catalog access switches.
You can also change what AI channels see without touching your storefront. Shopify Catalog Mapping lets you send a different product title, description or category from a metafield or metaobject. Compare-at price sharing is optional. We cover field-by-field mapping in our Shopify Catalog mapping guide for supplement and skincare brands.
What direct checkout does not support
Direct checkout in Google, Copilot and Meta runs on Shopify, but it is not your full checkout. Per Shopify's channel help pages, it does not support:
- Subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products
- Local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points
- Requiring customers to sign in
- Most checkout blocks, including custom fields, upsells, loyalty, address autocomplete, consent collection and chat
- Google Analytics and custom pixels
It does support Shopify Functions for shipping, discounts and cart/checkout validation, plus automatic discounts and discount codes. If a Meta order needs information Meta cannot collect, the shopper is sent to your store checkout with the cart kept.
For Shopify Plus brands, this is the line to watch. A checkout you have tuned with Checkout Extensibility blocks, post-purchase upsells and loyalty redemptions becomes a plain checkout inside the AI channel. Your Functions-based discount and validation logic still runs.
Tracking and attribution: the gap nobody mentions
On direct checkouts in Google, Copilot and Meta, Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire. Only Shopify's server-to-server "checkout started" and "checkout completed" events do. Meta's help page adds that third-party marketing attribution pixels also do not fire.
What this means in practice:
- GA4 and ad platforms will under-count AI-channel sales.
- Your Shopify admin is the source of truth. Orders show channel or referrer attribution, and Meta orders are attributed to Meta.
- The Agentic page "shoppers" count measures visits from AI chat apps. Direct-checkout purchases do not add to it.
- Shopify began filtering identifiable bots from visit reports in late September 2026, so compare conversion rates across that date carefully.
The fix is server-side event forwarding (GA4 Measurement Protocol, server-side GTM or Meta Conversions API) keyed off Shopify order data, then reconciling against admin orders by channel each week.
Fees and eligibility
Fees: Shopify's help pages list no fees for direct checkout on Google, Copilot or Meta, and no channel fee for ChatGPT. You pay standard payment processing. Mark Zuckerberg has said Meta expects to take a small fee from Muse transactions over time, with no rate or start date announced.
Requirements for every channel:
- Products eligible for Shopify Catalog (title, at least one image, price above $0, published to Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless, not Unlisted)
- Accepted Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms
- Completed Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy under Settings > Policies
Markets: ChatGPT and Copilot need a store selling to US customers. Google needs a US-based store selling to US customers. Meta covers stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico. A Canadian store that sells only in Canada therefore qualifies for Meta direct checkout but not the other three.
Shopify does not document plan-tier differences or Plus-only controls for Agentic Storefronts as of October 2026.
Our recommended settings by store type
These are the defaults we start from on client stores. Adjust for your own risk tolerance.
| Store type | Master switch | Catalog access | Direct checkout | Auto enroll |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-purchase DTC catalog, server-side tracking in place | On | On | On | On |
| Subscription-led brand (Recharge, Skio, Appstle, Seal) | Off | On | On, after confirming every hero SKU has a one-time option | Off |
| Brand that relies on GA4 or Meta Ads attribution, no server-side events yet | Off | On | Off until server-side tracking is live | Off |
| Wholesale or MAP-controlled catalog | Off | Review per channel | Off | Off |
| Regulated products (supplements, skincare with drug claims) | Off | On after a claims review | On | Off |
Turning auto-enroll off means you decide on each new channel as it appears, instead of finding out after it is live.
Pre-flight checklist
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and record current settings
- Confirm all three policies are complete under Settings > Policies
- Decide on the master switch and auto-enroll
- Set direct checkout per channel and click Save
- Check the Listing quality score and fix the lowest-scoring products first
- Unlist or exclude products that should not sell in AI channels
- Move legal disclosures into the first 6,000 characters of descriptions
- Set up server-side order events and a weekly channel reconciliation
- Run a test purchase in each channel you can reach
Frequently asked questions
Where are Agentic Storefronts settings in Shopify?
They are at Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic, or admin.shopify.com/agentic. You need owner access or the Products > View and App and sales channel > Agentic permissions.
Is Shopify Agentic Storefronts on by default?
Yes, for eligible stores. The "Allow Shopify to manage for me" switch is on by default, which shares products with AI channels, turns on direct checkout and auto-enrolls the store in new channels. Stores on Shopify's Agentic plan have direct checkout off by default.
How do I turn off Meta AI checkout on Shopify?
Go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me," open Meta AI and Muse, turn off Direct checkout and click Save. Your products stay discoverable unless you also turn off Shopify Catalog access.
How do I stop Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout?
Turn off the master switch, open Google AI Mode and Gemini, turn off Direct checkout and save. Products remain discoverable through Merchant Center, and buyers are sent to your site to pay.
Does robots.txt block Shopify Catalog?
No. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt only affects open-web discoverability. Catalog feeds are controlled by the Catalog access switches.
How long does it take to opt out?
Turning off Shopify Catalog access can take up to 7 days to stop data sharing. Plan changes at least a week before a sale.
Are there fees for selling in AI channels?
Shopify lists no channel or direct-checkout fees beyond standard payment processing. Meta has said it may take a small transaction fee from Muse in the future, with no terms published.
Can subscription products sell through direct checkout?
No. Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products are not supported in direct checkout on Google, Copilot or Meta. ChatGPT sends buyers to your own checkout, so subscriptions work there.
