Short answer: Since late September 2026, eligible US Shopify stores can sell directly inside Google AI Mode and the Gemini app through a checkout built on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and it is on by default. Keep it on if your best sellers are simple single products and you report from Shopify order data. Turn it off under Sales channels > Agentic if your revenue depends on subscriptions, bundles, checkout blocks or pixel-based attribution. Opting out does not remove you from Google's AI results.
On September 22, 2026, Google was notifying eligible Shopify merchants that their products could now be bought directly through AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. Eligible products are automatically included once a store is matched with its Merchant Center account. Asked what merchants had to do, Google Ads expert Menachem Ani answered: "No action on our end."
For a Shopify Plus brand, that means a second checkout may already be live for your products, built and rendered outside your theme, and nobody on your team has tested it.

What changed in September 2026
| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| Jan 11 | Google and Shopify launch UCP and announce native shopping in AI Mode and Gemini, "rolling out soon" |
| Feb onward | Google describes UCP checkout as a phased program for select participating merchants |
| Around Sep 18–22 | Google expands native checkout and emails eligible Shopify merchants |
| Sep 22 | Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable report the notifications |
Shopify's Google help page describes direct checkout as "active by default for eligible stores" and still rolling out to Google users. Shopify's own blog says Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout is powered by UCP and limited to US buyers.
How Google AI Mode checkout works for Shopify stores
Discovery comes from Google Merchant Center, not Shopify Catalog. Most Shopify stores feed Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel with automatic product and shipping sync on. That is why the Google entry under Sales channels > Agentic has a Direct checkout switch but no Catalog switch.
Checkout is a Shopify-powered direct checkout shown inside Google's interface. The shopper pays with a credit or debit card, plus a subset of the accelerated checkout options active on your store. Shopify does not list which ones, so don't assume Shop Pay or Google Pay until you see them in a test.
Orders land in your Shopify admin with channel attribution. Shopify's March 2026 update says merchants remain the merchant of record, but the Google help page doesn't address it, or order notifications and return processing. Confirm all three with a test order.
Fees. Shopify lists no fee for direct checkout beyond standard payment processing.
Who is eligible
Per Shopify's help page and Search Engine Land, your store needs to:
-
Be based in the US and sell to US customers
-
Have a valid Google Merchant Center account, with products available through the Google & YouTube channel or another feed
-
Have Shopify Catalog-eligible products
-
Accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms
-
Complete your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy under Settings > Policies, with the return policy consistent with Merchant Center
A Canadian or other non-US store is not eligible for Google direct checkout, even if it sells into the US.
What doesn't carry over to Google's checkout
Google's direct checkout is not your checkout.
Products not supported
-
Subscriptions
-
Product bundles
-
Customizable products
-
B2B-only products
Checkout options not supported
-
Local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points
-
Requiring customers to sign in
Checkout blocks that might not display. Only blocks with checkout blocking enabled are even eligible to load, and Shopify says that doesn't guarantee they will:
-
Blocks that change the purchase: quantities, add-ons, upsells, surcharges
-
Loyalty and rewards
-
Address autocomplete and client-side validation
-
Consent collection
-
Chat
-
Header, footer and payment-section blocks
-
Informational blocks such as trust badges, reviews and terms
Tracking. Custom pixels and client-side Google Analytics don't fire. Only Shopify's server-to-server checkout-started and checkout-completed events do.
What does work: Shopify Functions for shipping, discounts and cart or checkout validation, automatic discounts, and discount codes.
Should you opt out? A decision guide

| Your situation | Keep it on | Opt out (for now) |
|---|---|---|
| Best sellers are standalone products with simple variants | ✓ | |
| Subscriptions drive most first orders (supplements, coffee, skincare refills) | ✓, unless hero SKUs also sell one-time | |
| Bundles, kits or gift sets are core offers | ✓ | |
| Checkout blocks carry required content (consent, compliance notes, gift messages) | ✓, or move the logic into Functions | |
| Paid media budgets depend on pixel attribution | ✓ until server-side events are live | |
| You report from Shopify order data and server-side events | ✓ | |
| You want reach in Google's AI answers with fewer checkout steps | ✓ |
The middle path most brands should take: keep products discoverable, test direct checkout on a few hero SKUs, and decide with data. Opting out of direct checkout doesn't remove you from AI Mode or Gemini. Shoppers are sent to your website to finish the purchase.
A note for supplement and wellness brands
Subscribe-and-save carries the margin for many supplement brands, and subscriptions are not supported in Google's direct checkout. Before you decide, check which hero products offer a one-time purchase option. Those should still be eligible for Google's checkout (confirm in a test), while subscription-only products may be hidden or redirected to your site.
Google's AI surfaces also follow Merchant Center policies, which prohibit false or misleading health claims and certain ingredients. Claims that pass on your PDP can still cost you eligibility in Google's feed. Our Shopify Catalog mapping guide for supplement and skincare brands covers claims-safe product data.
How to opt out of Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout
-
In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
-
Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me. This unlocks per-channel controls.
-
Open Google AI Mode and Gemini.
-
Turn off Direct checkout.
-
Click Save.
-
Decide on Auto enroll new storefronts so the next channel doesn't arrive with checkout on.
Two cautions:
-
Don't turn the master switch back on as a shortcut. It re-enables direct checkout on every channel.
-
To remove a product from Google's AI surfaces entirely, we recommend excluding it from your Merchant Center feed, since Google discovery runs through Merchant Center rather than the Shopify Catalog switches. Setting a product to Unlisted also removes it, but takes it out of Google search too.
Every other channel's switches are covered in our Shopify Agentic Storefronts settings guide.
Before you decide: four tests
-
Product data test. Compare titles, descriptions, prices and variants in Merchant Center against Shopify. Mismatches show up in AI answers.
-
Offer test. Search for a single product, a bundle and a subscription product in AI Mode and note which offer a direct checkout.
-
Order test. Place one real order through Google's checkout. Confirm channel attribution, taxes, shipping, the confirmation email and that a return can be processed normally.
-
Reporting test. Check what GA4 and your ad platforms record for that order. If they miss it, set up server-side events before you scale.
Where Google fits among AI channels
Google is one of several AI channels with in-chat checkout. Microsoft Copilot runs a similar Shopify-powered checkout, Meta's Muse has announced Shop Pay checkout, and ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout. Our UCP vs ACP vs WebMCP vs MCP comparison explains the protocols behind each, and how to make your Shopify checkout agent-ready covers checkout preparation across all of them. Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode checkout on by default for Shopify stores?
Yes, for eligible stores. Shopify's help page says direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is active by default for eligible stores, and Google told merchants eligible products are included automatically once a store is matched with its Merchant Center account.
Who is eligible for Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout on Shopify?
US-based Shopify stores selling to US customers, with a valid Merchant Center account, Catalog-eligible products, accepted Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms and completed store policies. Direct checkout is shown only to US-based shoppers.
How do I opt out of Google AI Mode checkout on Shopify?
Go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me," open Google AI Mode and Gemini, turn off Direct checkout and click Save.
If I opt out, will my products disappear from Google AI Mode?
No. Products can still be discovered in AI Mode and Gemini, and shoppers are sent to your website to complete the purchase. To remove a product entirely, exclude it in your Merchant Center feed.
Does Google AI Mode checkout support subscriptions?
No. Shopify lists subscriptions as unsupported in Google's direct checkout, along with bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products.
What payment methods does Google AI Mode checkout accept?
Shopify says shoppers pay with a credit or debit card, plus a subset of the accelerated checkout options active on your store. Shopify doesn't name which ones, so check in a test order.
Will Google Analytics track Google AI Mode orders?
Not through client-side tags. Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire on Google's direct checkout. Only Shopify's server-to-server checkout events do, so use server-side tracking and your Shopify admin for reporting.
What protocol powers Google AI Mode checkout?
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard Google co-developed with Shopify and other retailers.
